Read on to uncover the history of Waterpipes:

WATERPIPE / NARGILE / HOOKAH / SHEESHA / HUBBLE-BUBBLE

The original waterpipe came from India, but it was rather primitive, as it was made out of coconut shells. Its popularity spread to Iran, where the word "nargil" means coconut in Persian, and through Iran to the rest of the Arab world. However, it was in 17th century Turkey that the nargile completed its revolution, and has not changed its style for the last couple of hundred years.

Waterpipes suffered a decline with the introduction of cigarettes, which people were able to smoke on the run. One needed to sit down and relax to enjoy nargile with friends and company. Rules were created even for lighting the hubble-bubble, and special corners were reserved in the coffee houses for waterpipe smokers.

During the Ottoman times, the waterpipe became an object d'art with crystal, colored glass, or even silver and gold bottles that were decorated with fruits or flowers. A waterpipe consists of four parts:

  • Body, or "govde". It is filled with water, and usually made of glass, but you can find eloborate ones made of silver, porcelain, crystal or gold.
  • Bowl, or "lule". It is the top of the nargile that is covered with a conical cap so that the flame may be sheltered on windy days. A special plug of tobacco is put in the lule.
  • Tube, or "marpuc". It is a long flexible hose attached to the pipe to convey the air. Marpucs may have embroidery, beadwork or other craft.
  • Mouthpiece, or "agizlik". It is used to inhale the smoke at the end of the tube. You need to suck gently on the agizlik in order to generate bubbling sounds in the water.

Today the major market for waterpipes is for flavored tobacco products such as apple, mango, strawberry, cappuccino, rose or many other flavor varieties. Hubble-bubbles have caught the interest of the new generation and nargile cafes or hookah lounges are the new trend in many cities around the world. Some compare it to the cigar bars of the 1990's and say that hookah lounges will be the trademark of the 2000's.
