The casing and toasting of burley tobacco is a critical process in the development of an American Blended style cigarette. During this process the burley lamina is cased with humectants, sugars and other flavoring components. The cased lamina enters the toaster at elevated moisture levels, approximately 30%, and is exposed to temperatures up to 140º centigrade. During this process thermally catalyzed reactions occur, generating various aroma chemicals which enhance the rich, dark and nutty character of burley tobacco while adding smooth rich flavor to the tobacco smoke.
The flavoring ingredient components included in the burley casing formula can modify the aroma and smoke flavor dramatically. The specific formulation is dependent upon the quality of the burley grades included in the blend and the required subjective attributes of the end-product.
